When we hear slavery we think of the transatlantic slave trade which is long gone. It is true the Slavery Abolition Act (1833) abolished slavery in most British colonies, freeing more than 800,000 people, and the 13th Amendment (1865) abolished slavery in the United States. Unfortunately despite this slavery is not dead. More than 40 million people worldwide are victims of modern slavery. Modern slavery is not defined in law, but it is an umbrella term that covers forced labour, debt bondage, forced marriage, and human trafficking. Boiling it down to its essence it means a situation where a person is being exploited and cannot refuse or leave because of coercion, violence, deception, threats and/or abuse of power.

All of us at Charming Beads believe wholeheartedly that people should be free so to show our support for the abolishment of modern slavery our smashing Chains have come out swinging. We’ve created the image of a broken chain (our chains are as unbroken as our resolve in supporting this day) to show what we hope we as a world can achieve breaking the chains of those in modern slavery.
